Severed Savior: Brutality is law

11/12/07  ||  The Duff

If you’re reading this review, I’m guessing that you’re already well aware of what kind of metal Severed Savior play and enjoy it simultaneously. With a title like “Brutality is Law”, Severed Savior make it known that they don’t frolic with the wood-elves that are Nightwish fans. Complex death metal a la Disgorge is what you get, except these guys bless their albums with a complementary production – I don’t think the music is as good as say on Decrepit Birth’s “... And Time Begins”, but because I don’t have to spend half my lifetime figuring out whatever’s being played means that I’m immediately going to prefer this over something where the drums predominate and the guitars are nowhere to be found.

Influences are obvious – I get a lot of Suffocation from this, which I’m getting a little tired of hearing with every new death metal band I approach, yet I’m willing to acknowledge that it can’t be escaped either, Suffocation being the tits in the metal realm. To be honest, I heard nothing but great things about Severed Savior from Spawn of Possession fans and the likes, so I reckoned this would be along the same lines as the best Neurotic Records has to offer – maybe not reinventing death metal, but still something standout when considering all the regular tripe of today.

Although I’m not completely blown away by this band, and have difficulty figuring out why some of death metal’s most promising and even leading musicians support it so readily, I’m willing to admit that Severed Savior are a talented outfit that may not obtain the praise they warrant from this reviewer purely because extreme, brutal death metal isn’t the greatest music to play when trying to share my bed. That’s it – if you want more, read my Disgorge and Decrepit Birth reviews, add a decent, crunchy production to the formula and take away Tim Yeung – the musicianship isn’t as technical, flawlessly executed or of a nature suggesting its being performed by musicians with enough experience under their belt to know much about well-crafted arrangements or subtlety, either.

7 good bands that deserve attention from a select few out of 10.
